YouTube Discovery | Ep. 04 | Tushar Lall (The Indian Jam Project) - Indo Western Fusion

Namaste! Welcome back to another ऍपिसोड of YouTube Discovery. So what are we going to talk about aaj?

So today I have decided not to write in English because in India, people don't speak इंग्लिश. We speak hinglish which is a combination of हिंदी and English. No matter kitni bhi koshish kar le to try and act sophisticated. We are all desi at heart and that's the language we are most comfortable with.

Same goes with a lot of other stuff we do, watch and experience everyday.
1. We may love the Oreos but nothing beats Parle-जी (G maane genius)
2. We may love Taratinos and Scorseses but that "tumse ना हो पायेगा" dialogue from GoW becomes our punchline whenever our friends try to act oversmart.

Well, not everything in desi sounds and feels good. One of the biggest examples of such a disasters are hindi dubbed angreji movies. Or for that matter, this post which is on the verge of going horribly wrong with my weird experimentation to create a fusion of हिंदी and English phrases.

There are very few people who are talented enough to manage to blend in desi vibe into international content seamlessly. I am not one of those. Fortunately I got a chance to get in touch with one such perfectly talented person - Tushar Lall.

"The Indian Jam Project is a fusion platform, founded by young Producer/Composer Tushar Lall, who is the brains behind arranging and composing the Indianised adaptations, often by bombing them with his own compositions. The arrangements are performed with him and some amazing musicians - Prasad Rahane (Sitar), Samay Lalwani (Tabla), Sri Sandeep Mishra (Sarangi) , Prathamesh Salunke (Flute), Vivaan Kapoor (Percussions) and many more. Tushar is attempting to knit classical Indian tones into the script of western music to showcase the beauty of Indian Music. It is a one of a kind concept where fusion of Indo-western styles of music produces a concoction which is deeply emotive as well as thought-provoking showing that music transcends boundaries and has no language. This overwhelming support and love from people makes IJP do what they're doing!"

I have been following his work since he uploaded his first video and all I can say is it has only gone upwards since then! He picks up theme songs of popular English television series and Hollywood movies. I am not familiar with all the original versions; of the music he has created which makes it little difficult to enjoy that 'welcoming change'. Nonetheless, even if you listen to them as standalone tracks, the musical arrangements of the indian instruments is so soothing. He has a lot of new stuff planned which he talked about in his last video and some of it is also part of the interview below. But before that, here are my Top 3 Picks of the Indian Jam Project (from the ones whose original version I am familiar with)

1. Star Wars Music Indian Tribute | The Indian Jam Project

2. BBC Sherlock Theme | The Indian Jam Project

3. Game of Thrones Theme | The Indian Jam Project (most of you must have already seen this video on YouTube or Facebook)

ME: What was the inspiration to start Indian Jam Project? Or in other words, what lead to the creation of your first Game of Thrones video?
TUSHARMy music background is western but I am surrounded by people who are doing Indian Classical. Also, I am a big Game of Thrones Fan! So, one day I thought of making an Indian arrangement of the theme song. I called a bunch of my friends, recorded the whole thing, shot the video and that's where it all started!

ME: What kind of response were you expecting when you uploaded that first video? When did it dawned upon you that things are getting serious on your YouTube channel?

TUSHARI was expecting some response to be honest since the concept is very different! But then I started getting a lot of views on my youtube channel and the comments section started getting flooded! That feeling was overwhelming!

ME: How do you decide on which movie/tv show's music are you going to Jam on next? Do you take into consideration popular of requests from your viewers?

TUSHARThe comments section on every video is a great help. Otherwise, whatever appeals to the mass, is catchy and can be easily fused with a raga! In some cases, just playing it straight up with Indian instruments as well!

MEYou talked about your new project in your latest video. Will it still be YouTube exclusive content or will you be moving towards more commercial medium? (if you are at a liberty to disclose it)

TUSHARLet's just say IJP is stepping out of the western scores category and stepping into some good english music!

ME: You are considered as one of most underrated YouTube - India music artist. Your videos have high virality but still not many people are aware of the kind of amazing work you put out for the world when compared to other artists. What are your thoughts on it?

TUSHARTo be honest, I really don't mind! It's actually a very nice feeling, makes me feel like I have a good small set of audience who actually is listening to everything I am putting out!
As long as people can relate to what I'm doing, it's amazing! The number really doesn't matter! :)

Thank you so much Tushar for allowing me to write about your channel and taking your time out for such honest answers! I really appreciate it. Eagerly looking forward to your future compositions.
