Music Review | TVF Humorously Yours (Web Series) | Vaibhav Bundhoo

Last one and half years has seen a surge in web mini series. All of them targeting the 'traditionally averse to television' youth (t.a.t.t.y.). So much has been the impact of these web series that even the mainstream players like YRF and MTV are creating content on YouTube. However, the most ingenious and the pioneer of web series have been The Viral Fever (TVF). They have really managed to match the wavelength of t.a.t.t.y. with all their web series. Apart from their amazing plot, TVF's content is also known for out-of-the-box soundtrack. I decided to start reviewing music for web series last week and was contemplating whether to start with my favorite one or the latest one (the struggle is real). To make my decision easy TVF launched the original soundtrack for their latest TVF Humoursly Yours.  I would've had done a Music Mention of my favourite music album among web series had TVF not released this one. But since it's officially released, this counts as a music review now and going forward. I recommend (but not a compulsion) watching the web series first to get the context of the music as well as this review. So without further ado, let's get right into it!

Album Release Date: 21st January 2017

Original Soundtrack Available here: http://tvfplay.com/episode/1/145/169/873

La Valse de Vipul (Humorously Yours Theme)
Runtime: 1 minute 32 seconds
If you've seen the web series you recognize this song for sure. What intrigued me was the title of this song and this is what I did to figure out what it actually meant.
The Waltz of Vipul. Tried looking up the dictionary meaning for waltz - "a dance in triple time performed by a couple who as a pair turn rhythmically around and around as they progress around the dance floor." What a brilliant metaphor to sum the entire story of the web series. Life tends to go in circles at sometimes but when you look at the bigger scheme of things it's always moving forward. I literally felt like holding someone's hand, pulling them closer and groove to the music. The song starts with just piano and gradually builds up with percussions. The only part that distracted me was the last 30 seconds where electric guitar was introduced.

Taqdeer Ki Lakeer (Episode 1 End - M for Manager)
Runtime: 2 minutes 55 seconds
The bass intro does give it a sense of distress and dark times. "Khushiyon se zyada na hai kisi ka irada aaja khud ko rihaa kar le" - lines are very catchy yet very confusing to memorize to actually sing it with the song. Though the song doesn't resonate with Vipul's personality but it does depict the situation he was going through at the end of episode 01.

Gol Gol (Episode 2 End)
Runtime: 3 minutes 22 seconds
Vaibhav Bundhoo took the title of this song quite literally. The entire song is a repetition of - "gol gol gol gol gol ghumaati hai yeh duniya" with occasional bursts of additional lyrics in the form of rap!

The Ride (Episode 3 Goa)
Runtime: 2 minutes 30 seconds
The song talks about no matter how much ever problems we've faced with each other and how much ever we fight, you're the one I'd like to spend my happy moments with. It is a really nice and breezy song but because of certain (minor) portions in the of dubstep - "woh moment hi chala gaya".

Dear Muse (Episode 3 End)
Runtime: 3 minutes 52 seconds
This is one of my favourite songs of the album! The song talks about an artist requesting his muse not to go away. He understands that the muse has her own life but requests to be with him whenever he invites. This song personifies the mythical relationship between the painter and their muse. The music itself is mellow. If you imagine it, you'll see two people walking down a lovely sunset and frame blurring to dark towards the end of the song.

Jah Gan (Episode 4 - High Montage)
Runtime: 2 minutes 12 seconds
When was the last time a Bollywood movie had a Reggae style song? I don't remember any. The title of the song means
Jah - the Rastafarian (religion of Jamaica) name of God.
Gan - both (translated from Latvian)
The chorus of the song goes like 'Jah gan is what we meet now' which means we are going to meet both the Gods now - the actual God and Mary Jane a.k.a. marijuana. If you've listen to Reggae song before and loved it, you will like this song too. The lyrics are hard to comprehend at first but a couple of listens and things will start to smoke up in your head😉

Anginat Sapne (Episode 5 End)
Runtime: 4 minutes 10 seconds
The lone song that has put vocals on the forefront as compared to other songs which were more of background score. I've noticed a pattern in Vaibhav's compositions in this album - most of his songs have a continuous repetition of a single verse. Might get a monotonous if used throughout the album but as a standalone song it hits really well. Every story has a comeback song, this is that song for Vipul Goyal in the series. Also, you'll find "Khushiyon se zyada na hai kisi ka irada aaja khud ko rihaa kar le" line in this song as well. Just a easter egg to make audience realize how far he's come from Episode 01.

Hard Work Montage (Episode 5)
Runtime: 2 minutes 30 seconds
This is another version of the theme song. I may have argued that only one of the songs should've been used but this song doesn't sound like an intro song, it sounds like an on-going process. The reason is that there is no lead instrument in this song, it is an orchestra. At any given point in run-time of this song, at least two instruments are being played.

For a web series of mere five episode, creating an entire album comprising of 8 songs is really commendable on TVF's part as well as for the mastermind behind the album - Vaibhav Bundhoo. Some of them were background scores which are often left unnoticed while watching the series. However, they are also not very impactful on their own without any context. Indian audiences are not used to background scores being released as part of music album. TVF has only released this album on audience's demand because we all have loved it so much. Another good news with the release of this album is that TVF is going to released soundtracks for all it's previous web series on 21st February 2017. So stay tune on their website for the songs and this blog for their reviews. Before I sign off, here are my favourites from the album:
La Valse de Vipul
Takdeer Ki Lakeer
Dear Muse
Jah Gan
Anginat Sapne

That is all I have for this album now. I hope you found this review useful. If you did then feel free to share it. Let me know you favourite song of the album in the comments below. Until then, Ciao...!!
